'Canberra'

When I saw the ship sailing into Southampton Water on her return from the Falklands War, the sun touching her starboard side as she made her way carefully towards the dock surrounded by a myriad little boats their crews allcheering and waving, not to mention the thousands of people on the quay itself and the red, white and blue balloons
being released into the air, I knew I had to commemorate the event in oil.

It was a large picture and a lot of emotion went into it - because at that time the 'Canberra' seemed to me to represent all that was best about Britain - she had been a long way to do an almost impossible job and had returned triumphant. In that moment we loved our country and our soldiers, sailors and airmen. It was a good day to be British.
